With didactic experiments, presentations given by experts, workshops, contests and exhibitions, the 5th version of the Universidad de Santiago’s Scientific Fair was held for three days. The activity is organized by the Faculty of Chemistry and Biology and is recognized as one of the main activities for science dissemination in Chile.
According to the fair’s coordinator, Professor Leonora Mendoza, “it is encouraging to see how the future professionals of this Faculty are committed to this initiative, in which students from many schools can be scientists for a day.”

The candidacy of the renowned electrochemist for the highest scientific award of the country is supported by our University and different associations and representatives of the national and international scientific world.

El profesor del Departamento de Ingeniería Informática, Dr. Sergio Velastín, expuso sobre el uso de la fusión de datos en la visión artificial, en el marco del XVII Congreso del Instituto de Ingeniería Eléctrica y Electrónica, IEEE, realizado en Salamanca (España). A la jornada asistieron unos 400 personeros de ministerios de Defensa de distintos países, como también integrantes de la OTAN.

Dr. Sergio Velastín, professor at the Department of Informatics Engineering of Universidad de Santiago de Chile, gave a talk on the use of data fusion in computer vision at the 17th Conference of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), held at Salamanca, Spain. Around 400 officials from the Ministries of Defense of different countries and members of the NATO attended the conference.

La directora del Laboratorio de Envases (Laben), Dra. María José Galotto, fue designada como Punto Nacional de Contacto para el Programa Marco Horizonte 2020, en el área de nanotecnología, instancia europea que destina fondos a la investigación e innovación en diferentes disciplinas. “Es un reconocimiento al posicionamiento que la Universidad ha alcanzado en el área de la Nanociencia y Nanotecnología, a través del CEDENNA”, puntualiza la investigadora.

Dr. María José Galotto, director of Universidad de Santiago’s Packaging Laboratory, was appointed as the National Contact Point for Horizon 2020 Framework Program in the area of nanotechnology. Horizon 2020 is a European program that provides funding for research and innovation in different fields. “This is in recognition of the University’s positioning in the area of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, reached through CEDENNA,” the researcher said.

Mediante un proyecto Fondecyt Regular, investigadores de la Facultad de Química y Biología, liderados por la Dra. Brenda Modak, indagan una cura que permita proteger a la salmonicultura nacional de la peligrosa bacteria Piscirickettsia Salmonis, utilizando plantas silvestres del desierto de Atacama.

By means of a Regular Fondecyt Project, researchers at the Faculty of Chemistry and Biology, led by Dr. Brenda Modak, are studying a treatment to protect the national salmon farming industry from the dangerous bacterium Piscirickettsia Salmonis, by using wild plants from the Atacama Desert.

El Centro Innovo, de nuestra Casa de Estudios, obtuvo estos recursos  para operar durante cuatro años el Fondo Subsidio Semilla de Asignación Flexible (SSAF), instancia destinada a acelerar emprendimientos científico tecnológicos, innovadores y con impacto a nivel internacional.
“Esta adjudicación implica un reconocimiento a la labor de la Incubadora de Negocios del Centro, que se ha dedicado a promover la cultura de la innovación y el emprendimiento y ha ayudado a formar nuevas empresas de base tecnológica”, remarca el director de Innovo, Luis Lino.
