 In the context of the second IDeA en Dos Etapas Contest of the Fondef Program of Conicyt, four projects of Universidad de Santiago with potential economical and social impact were awarded about US$800,000. 664 projects applied for the funding nationwide, but only 50 were selected.
For Dr Luis Magne, Head of the Technology Transfer Department of Universidad de Santiago, “The projects that were awarded funds represent the efforts made by our university to develop applied research projects that respond to the main problems of the country.”

Compartieron con 400 jóvenes de 71 países, conocieron a 15 Premios Nobel en el ámbito de la ciencia, y fueron galardonados por su entusiasmo y creatividad por la fotografía que hicieron llegar a la organización antes del viaje.
Los integrantes de la Facultad de Ciencia, Felipe Recabal Rivas y Eduardo Cancino Jaque, junto al estudiante de la Facultad Tecnológica, Renato Leiva Tubino, llevaron el nombre de nuestra Universidad a la primera versión del relevante encuentro científico juvenil a nivel mundial.

They shared with 400 youngsters from 71 countries, met 15 Nobel laureates in the fields of science and received recognition for their enthusiasm and creativity in the picture that they took and sent to the organizing committee before their trip.
Felipe Recabal Rivas and Eduardo Cancino Jaque, students at the Faculty of Science, and Renato Leiva Tubino, student at the Technological Faculty, represented Universidad de Santiago at the first version of this important science meeting for youngsters worldwide.

La académica de la Facultad Tecnológica, Dra. Laura Almendares Calderón, presentó en la Expo-Milán 2015 (Italia), su investigación referida al ‘Desarrollo de una tecnología para reemplazar la piel de la tuna por un recubrimiento que permita mantener las funciones fisiológicas, microbiológicas y organolépticas del fruto fresco’. La Dra. expuso en la semana dedicada a las mejores prácticas de desarrollo sostenible para la seguridad alimentaria.

Dr Laura Almendares Calderón, professor at the Technological Faculty of Universidad de Santiago, presented her study “Development of a technology to replace prickly pear skin with a peel to keep the physiological, microbiological and organoleptic properties of the fresh fruit” at the Expo Milano 2015 (Italy). Dr Almendares presented the innovation in an activity devoted to the best sustainable development practices for food security.

El Dr. Juan Escrig participó en la V Conferencia Internacional de Jóvenes Científicos y la Reunión General Anual de la Academia Mundial Joven, realizada entre el 25 y 29 de mayo, en Montebello, Canadá. En la oportunidad el académico convocó a sus pares a utilizar todos los medios de comunicación disponibles para difundir sus estudios ante la opinión pública en general y sus pares en particular. Esta instancia reúne a científicos de todo el mundo, quienes son elegidos por su demostrada excelencia en logros científicos y su vocación de servicio. Actualmente hay 200 miembros de 58 países.

Dr Juan Escrig participated in the Fifth International Conference for Young Scientists and the Annual General Meeting of the Global Young Academy, held between May 25thand 29th, in Montebello, Canada. On the occasion, professor Escrig encouraged his peers to use all available means to disseminate their work among general public and other scientists. This conference gathers scientists from around the world, who are selected for the excellence of their science and their commitment to service. Currently, it has 200 members from 58 countries.

En 1859 Charles Darwin publicó ‘El origen de las especies’, donde señaló que una especie invasora que exhibe un alto grado de parentesco evolutivo (relación filogenética) con la comunidad que invade, tendría escasas posibilidades de establecerse, pues la “lucha por la existencia” sería más intensa entre especies emparentadas. No obstante, experimentos actuales del investigador de la Facultad de Química y Biología y del CEDENNA, Dr. Sergio A. Castro, concluyeron algo diferente.

·         In 1859, Charles Darwin published the book “On the Origin of Species”, where he states that invading species with a high degree of evolutionary closeness to the invaded community (phylogenetic relationship), would be less likely to become established, because “struggle for survival” would be more intense between related species.

‘Entre biología y Utopía: Semblantes Ideológicos en las Ciencias de la Vida’ es el nombre del Fondecyt de Iniciación que dirige el Dr. Maurizio Espósito, que permitirá sinergias entre la investigación biomédica, comunicación y sus interacciones futuras. El estudio (de dos años) busca validar la importancia de las relaciones entre distintas disciplinas.
