Villarrica volcano eruptions may continue in the following weeks

Alonso Arellano, an expert in geophysics and geology, explains that, due to the type of lava, the potential following events should not be catastrophic. “We may expect stronger eruptions to last for weeks or months.” 
He says that most of the gas column will pass to the Argentinean territory, just like on other occasions.
“The alert actions taken for warning people have been adequate,” he says. He suggests people to be alert, because “there is always the possibility of fissures in the volcanic cone and lava could flow in other directions.”

 

Investigadores del Plantel son parte de expedición científica de INACH a la Antártica

Académicos del Departamento de Física, liderados por el Dr. Raúl Cordero,  formaron parte de la expedición científica realizada en noviembre por el Instituto Antártico Chileno (INACH) al “Glaciar Unión”, aportando valiosas mediciones sobre las propiedades ópticas de la nieve.

Academics at the Department of Physics, led by Dr. Raúl Cordero, were part of the scientific expedition made in November by the Chilean Antarctic Institute to Unión Glacier and they contributed with valuable measurements of the optical properties of snow.

En el marco de la 226ª reunión de la Electrochemical Society, ECS, el investigador de nuestra Universidad recibió el reconocimiento Fellow Class 2014,  por su contribución al progreso de la ciencia, la tecnología, el liderazgo en la disciplina y por su activa participación en la Sociedad de Electroquímica, convirtiéndose en el primer investigador activo en un país latinoamericano, que recibe esta distinción.

Dr. José Zagal honored by the Electrochemical Society of the United States

During the 226th meeting of the Electrochemical Society (ECS), the researcher at Universidad de Santiago was appointed Fellow of the 2014 ECS Class for his contribution to the progress of science and technology, his leadership in this discipline and his active membership in the ECS. He became the first active researcher in a Latin American country to be awarded this honor.

University promotes sustainability and energy efficiency in campus

In order to meet the goals set by Universidad de Santiago in the context of the “Sustainable Campus” Clean Production Agreement, the University Social Responsibility program developed the first training workshop on this matter, oriented to students, academics and administrative staff.
The initiative is one of the institutional actions to promote the knowledge on sustainability and to meet the goal of reducing the use of energy by 5% in the campus before March 2015, according to Santiago Peredo, RSU program’s alternate Director.

Idean innovador instrumento para medir la Formación Inicial Docente

El académico del Departamento de Educación, Saúl Contreras, desarrolla el Proyecto Fondecyt: “Formación Inicial Docente para enseñanza de las ciencias”, orientado a analizar la trayectoria académica de mil 200 estudiantes de Pedagogía de todo el país, para aportar un modelo explicativo sobre cómo los futuros profesores internalizan y aplican el conocimiento pedagógico curricular.
