In order to meet the goals set by Universidad de Santiago in the context of the “Sustainable Campus” Clean Production Agreement, the University Social Responsibility program developed the first training workshop on this matter, oriented to students, academics and administrative staff.

The initiative is one of the institutional actions to promote the knowledge on sustainability and to meet the goal of reducing the use of energy by 5% in the campus before March 2015, according to Santiago Peredo, RSU program’s alternate Director.

Un efectivo aporte realiza la académica de la Escuela de Obstetricia, Paula Núñez, quien aprendió la técnica de confección de los bebés simuladores (reborn) en base a vinilo, cuyas características son tan reales, que hacen difícil la distinción con los recién nacidos, al tiempo que propician el desarrollo de destrezas y las habilidades blandas entre los estudiantes.

Paula Núñez, a professor at the School of Obstetrics and Child Care of Universidad de Santiago has effectively contributed to midwifery students training: she learned to make vinyl-based reborn babies which are so real that it is difficult to distinguish them from real newborn babies and which help students to develop professional and soft skills.

El Grupo de Óptica y Fotónica del Plantel, liderado por el estudiante de postgrado, Pablo Fredes, organizó un campamento didáctico de astrofotografía, tendiente al aprendizaje del manejo de diversos instrumentos con tecnología de punta, para observar el panorama estelar, logrando fotografías inéditas.

The Optics and Photonics Group of Universidad de Santiago, led by graduate student Pablo Fredes, organized an educational astrophotography camp aiming to promote knowledge on how to handle different state-of-the-art technologies to observe the stellar panorama, capturing unprecedented photographs.

El Instituto Nacional de Propiedad Industrial (Inapi), premió a nuestra Casa de Estudios por destacarse como la tercera universidad chilena con mayor número de solicitudes de patentes de inventos, que buscan aportar al desarrollo país en áreas como la química y biología, ingeniería y tecnología. The National Institute of Industrial Property recognized Universidad de Santiago as the third Chilean university with the highest number of invention patent requests that seek to contribute to the country development in fields like chemistry and biology, engineering and technology. Maximiliano Santa Cruz, Inapi’s National Director and Óscar Bustos, Vice President of Research, Development and Innovation of Universidad de Santiago,   encouraged the University community to continue constantly producing industrial innovations to contribute to society.

Un equipo interdisciplinario de la Universidad, liderado por la investigadora de la Facultad Tecnológica, Dra. Silvia Matiacevich, está abocado a la creación de una laminilla comestible que podría aumentar en un 30 por ciento la vida útil de alimentos frescos.

Universidad de Santiago’s interdisciplinary research team, led by Dr. Silvia Matiacevich from the Technological Faculty, is focused on developing an edible film that could increase the shelf life of fresh foods by 30%.

El Dr. en Biotecnología, Patricio Flores y la estudiante del Magíster de Gestión Tecnológica, mención Biotecnología, Yu-Wen Tang, ambos de la Facultad de Química y Biología, obtuvieron financiamiento para desarrollar una estrategia de comercialización de una enzima que posee múltiples ventajas en el diagnóstico de enfermedades.
