Presidential Mission: Usach Researcher Bridges Chile and India for Ayurveda in Healthcare

Dr. Susana Urrutia, MD, will join President Boric's delegation to India to strengthen medical institutional ties.

Ayurveda

With more than 5,000 years of history, Ayurvedic medicine is about to leap forward in Chile thanks to the efforts of Dr. Susana Urrutia, a researcher of the Faculty of Chemistry and Biology at Usach and one of the leading authorities of this discipline in the country.

The surgeon, with more than 25 years of experience integrating Ayurveda into conventional medicine, has been selected as the only expert in this field as part of the upcoming presidential tour to India.

Her mission is clear: to pave the way for Ayurveda to be taught in Chilean universities and recognized by the public health system. Demonstrating this momentum is the University of Santiago de Chile, whose commitment to public health has led to a strong interest in Ayurvedic medicine and the development of a forthcoming course for health professionals.

Ayurveda is a system of traditional medicine from India that seeks to balance the body, mind, and spirit. It is known as the “science of life” because its name derives from two words: “ayur”, which means life; and “veda”, science.

“One of the main objectives is to build a bridge of academic collaboration. The fact of having Ayurveda training programs in Chile, based on science and medicine, will allow more health professionals to apply it with knowledge and support,” said Dr. Urrutia.

Bridging Chile and India Through Integrative Medicine

During her stay in India, the professor of the Diploma in the Medicinal Use of Phytocannabinoids will hold strategic meetings in three key cities:

●             Delhi: Discussion with the Ministry of Ayush to further develop courses endorsed by Chilean institutions, including Usach.

●             Bombay: Meeting with the Doothapapeshwar Laboratory, a world reference in Ayurvedic pharmacology, to establish links with Chemistry and Pharmacy faculties in Chile.

 ●            Bangalore: Meeting with the World Ayurveda Congress committee to create scientific alliances between Indian and Chilean universities.

"This trip offers a unique opportunity to further establish Ayurveda in Chile, backed by India's leading medical institutions. Our goal is to advance its integration in academic and clinical settings, expanding access to its benefits," she explained.

Ayurveda in Chile: Practice Informing Research

Dr. Urrutia's contributions extend beyond patient care to significant research. Presented at international Ayurveda congresses in India, her studies have affirmed the effectiveness of this medicine in diverse health domains, gaining international validation.

Close collaboration with the Indian Embassy in Chile has also been crucial for disseminating Ayurveda in Chile.

"Although we've advanced significantly in education and outreach, much work remains to integrate Ayurveda into Chilean public health. This is a challenge, but one we can overcome with the right support," she explained.

A Future Where Health Transcends Absence of Disease

Dr. Susana Urrutia earnestly hopes to see Ayurveda gain recognition as a complementary medicine in the Chilean public health system.

"Rather than replacing conventional medicine, Ayurveda seeks to work alongside it. We want to ensure more people can access this medicine seriously and professionally, leading to improved well-being from a holistic perspective," she concluded.
