Usach Academic Nominated for 2026 For Women in Science Award

The L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Award highlights the scientific and technological contributions of women globally. Historically, the award has recognized three Chilean women: Gloria Montenegro (1998), Ligia Gargallo (2007), and María Teresa Ruiz (2017).

One of the candidates for the 2026 award is Dr. Andrea Mahn Osses, an academic in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Bioprocesses and Vice-Dean of R&D and Postgraduate Studies at the Faculty of Engineering, whose solid track record in research has led to her nomination in the Health Biotech category.

Strengthening Atacama's Goat Sector: Usach Project Receives INDAP Funding

The Atacama Goat Program, a major Usach-INDAP initiative, is designed to enable Atacama goat milk producers to significantly maintain or increase their productive activity, remain in the territory, and boost their gross margin. This is achieved by strengthening the production and commercial aspects of their systems through the incorporation of practices and management techniques linked to sustainability and value addition.

Usach Awarded Fondef IT 2025 Grant for Innovative Transport and Electricity Projects

The National Research and Development Agency (ANID) announced the results of the Fondef IDeA 2025 Technological Research Competition (Fondef IT), in which two projects submitted by the University of Santiago de Chile obtained funding.

This achievement reflects an increase in institutional participation compared to 2024. Last year, the University submitted 11 applications and secured one award. In this year’s edition, Usach submitted 15 initiatives and obtained two awards, demonstrating its growing commitment to and success in applied research funding among Chilean universities.

AVINYA is a multidisciplinary and global seminar, coordinated by the Central University of Bihar (India) in the context of World Intellectual Property Day. Usach Researcher in Nature Astronomy: Massive Black Holes Create Their Own Fuel

A significant discovery by Valeria Olivares, a physicist at the University of Santiago, and an international team of astronomers, published in Nature Astronomy, reveals a correlation between the surface brightness of hot and warm gas in the central filaments of galaxy clusters. 

This finding provides crucial insight into the origin of these gaseous filaments, the primary fuel source for supermassive black holes and star formation. 

Leading the Field: Usach Academic Among the Most Prolific Globally in Martial Arts and Combat Sports Research

Dr. Tomás Herrera Valenzuela is an academic at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the University of Santiago de Chile, a specialist in sports science and leader of a line of research that crosses sports performance with the health impact of martial arts and combat sports. With more than ten years of research experience and international collaborations with renowned researchers in the field, his work has recently been recognized in two bibliometric studies published in indexed scientific journals.
