Dr. Carlos Lizama, an academic in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (DMCC) at the University of Santiago, Chile, was recognized as one of the best mathematical scientists in Chile in the fourth edition of the international ranking compiled by Research.com, which recognizes researchers with the greatest impact in their discipline globally.
Dr. Lizama secured the seventh national and 2,815th global positions in the prestigious international Research.com platform’s “best mathematical scientists” category. This places him within the top 1% of the most influential researchers in his discipline.
The Research.com ranking utilizes the D-index (H-index by Discipline), a metric assessing researchers’ impact solely within their field. The DMCC academic achieved a D-index of 33, with 3,900 citations and 196 publications, based on consolidated data from platforms like OpenAlex and CrossRef.
Research.com performed an extensive analysis of 166,880 researchers, from which 15,281 academics qualified for evaluation in the demanding field of mathematics. Strict criteria for inclusion involved a D-index of 30 or more and a substantial number of publications pertinent to the disciplinary area. Furthermore, the editorial team manually reviewed each profile, factoring in additional achievements and recognitions.
“This recognition came as a pleasant surprise and a true honor, both personally and professionally,” said Dr. Lizama. He added, “Having received a similar distinction last year—being named among the top 2% of leading scientists worldwide by Stanford and Elsevier—makes this accolade even more special, especially as April marked my 40th anniversary as an Usach academic. It’s an excellent recognition of my career on this academic milestone.”
Regarding the keys to his research career, the academic emphasized that “perseverance and discipline have been fundamental,” but also understanding that research in Chile can no longer be seen only as an exciting activity or a hobby that is fortunate enough to be remunerated. He also emphasized, “Today, it is a professional endeavor that requires responsibility, competence, honesty, and, above all, respect for others. All of this contributes to a healthy and virtuous work environment, which undoubtedly enhances results and visibility in any field one may be involved in.”
In addition to Dr. Lizama, a cohort of other Usach academics earned recognition in the 2025 Research.com ranking across various disciplines. The Faculty of Chemistry and Biology saw Dr. Eduardo Lissi Gervaso and Dr. José Zagal Moya featured among the Best Scientists in Chemistry. Furthermore, Dr. Pablo Vergara Egert of the Faculty of Technology was acknowledged in Ecology and Evolution, and Dr. Gustavo Zúñiga Navarro, also from the Faculty of Chemistry and Biology, was recognized in Plant Sciences and Agronomy.
The recognition of Dr. Lizama and his Usach colleagues in the Research.com ranking underscores the university’s commitment to research excellence and the sustained impact its academic community generates both nationally and internationally. Such achievements highlight the talent and dedication of Usach researchers, solidifying the university’s position as a benchmark in generating first-rate knowledge.
