Dr. Francisco Plaza-Vega, an academic at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (DMCC), has been selected for two Technical Scientific Fisheries Committees (CCTP). These bodies advise the Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca) under the Ministry of Economy, Development, and Tourism, providing the scientific evidence necessary for the sustainable management of Chile’s marine resources.
Over the next four years, the Usach DMCC academic will serve on the Small Pelagic Fisheries and Pelagic Horse Mackerel Technical Scientific Committees. These advisory bodies provide the essential scientific evidence and technical advice required for the sustainable management of hydrobiological resources, ensuring that research-driven knowledge guides national decision-making in fisheries and aquaculture.
Established under the General Law on Fisheries and Aquaculture, the Technical Scientific Fisheries Committees (CCTP) consist of specialists who advise Subpesca on critical scientific matters. The latest selection process appointed experts across eight commissions, focusing on marine sciences, fisheries resource management, and conservation, to guide national policy.
Dr. Plaza-Vega was selected for his expertise in Statistics, Data Science, and Machine Learning, with a specialized focus on climate change and fisheries. Holding a degree in Fisheries Engineering from the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso (PUCV), as well as a Master’s and Doctorate in Statistics from the University of Valparaíso, his interdisciplinary profile is uniquely suited for the sustainable management of marine resources.
The appointment of Dr. Francisco Plaza-Vega highlights the scientific excellence of Usach and its growing influence in national advisory bodies. This role reinforces the Faculty of Science as a leader in interdisciplinary research, bridging the gap between scientific innovation and public policy to support the sustainable development of Chile’s marine sectors.
