The Science and Technology Awards Ceremony is an event of the Organization of American States (OAS) that honors outstanding scientists and innovators throughout the Americas. In 2024, seven scientists, researchers and innovators stood out for their pioneering work to improve lives in this part of the hemisphere.
One of them was Pablo Zamora, a graduate of the Faculty of Chemistry and Biology of the University of Santiago de Chile, who was recognized for being a “visionary in the field of biotechnology and sustainable agriculture”.
“Intellectual capacities are not enough if there is no humility, no humanity and no empathy for the problems outside,” said the PhD in Biotechnology from Usach during his thank-you speech in which he highlighted his training.
“I am a son of public education. I studied at the University of Santiago where I did my undergraduate and my doctorate,“ said Zamora, who said he was convinced that '”science is very good for politics, science is very good for companies and the scientific method helps to look at problems from a different point of view."
Recognition
The OAS recognized Zamora's impact in the development of technologies that have transformed food production and sustainability, taking advantage of artificial intelligence to create plant-based and environmentally friendly alternatives. His innovations have contributed to reducing carbon emissions as well as making quality food accessible around the world.
The ceremony, which took place in Washington, D.C. on Friday, December 13, highlighted the work of researchers from Uruguay, Mexico, the United States, Canada, Honduras and Barbados who carry out initiatives related to health, technology, biomedical, electrical and environmental engineering.
Currently, Pablo Zamora is the executive president of Fundación Chile and is recognized for his career as an entrepreneur and co-founder of The NotCo, as well as a board member of Banco Estado bank. He is also a director of the Associated Companies of the Faculty of Chemistry and Biology, a member of the Strategic Board of the Science Up Consortium and an active representative of the University of Santiago de Chile.
